“I’ve been tracking my calories in and the number of calories I'm burning during exercise religiously… but I’m not losing as much weight as I thought I would be doing. Why isn’t this working, what am I doing wrong?!?”
This is the question we often hear here at Blood Sweat & Muscle when new gym member join.
Yes, common fitness industry knowledge that reducing your calorie intake (or increasing the amount you burn) by 500 kcals a day should lead to about 1 pound of body fat loss per week. (i.e. -500 kcals a day x 7 days = -3500 kcals a week = 1 pound body fat.)
But this common methodology is... flawed. Unfortunately metabolic damage can slowly occur, due to the fact that your metabolism is adaptive. As you eat less, your metabolism slows, throwing off common assumptions about calorie balance.
Our Calorie Calculator, or Weight Loss calculator; depending on how you choose to use it, can be used to estimate the number of calories a person needs to consume each day. This calculator can also provide some simple guidelines for gaining or losing weight.
